What does it mean to “Grow Spiritually?” How do we “Follow Jesus?” We can only do it through the strength of the Lord, empowered by His Holy Spirit. This is not a passive process, rather the New Testament’s overwhelming push is that God commands us to intentionally pursue Him. Growth is, in some ways, our job as Christians.
So how do we grow? What are the approaches God uses?
- Intentionality Think About Your Spiritual Life.
As Christians we must prioritize our spiritual growth. If church is just an attendance, another meeting place, then very little will happen. Rather let us come on Sunday and every day hoping and praying to see the hand of God move. Prioritize a study of Scripture, prayer, fellowship, giving, service and outreach.
- Get to know people who are unchurched.
One of the ways God stretches us is by placing us with people who are radically different from us. We live in a world of radical diversity and thought. We will face a temptation to hang out only with people who agree with us and reinforce our own biases. But, we are called to go out.
- Don’t Be Afraid To Take Risks.
If you want to ensure that you are the same exact person in five years, live an unadventurous life in everything you do, take no risks. Nothing lost, nothing gained. No, instead live a life that will require maximum effort and knee-knocking faith.
- No Short Cuts.
Odds are true: growth hurts. Look back on your life and you will notice that some of the most difficult times in your life resulted in some of your strongest growth in the faith.
But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. 1 Cor. 15:57-58
